Through the Blizzard

We really were lucky to see the Northern Lights last night. This morning, although dawning with a beautiful sunrise, was overcast and snowing before we'd started sledding.

By now were had a little routine going, so it didn't take as long to get the the cabin sorted and things tidied up ready for departure. It was very hard to keep my bearings in the white-out conditions, but we covered a good distance during the morning.

I had every jacket on, bar the big overcoat that I'd borrowed from the kennels.

Without a breeze, the snowflakes fell undisturbed and undamaged by the wind.

Finally, the kennels came back into view...

There was a lot of kit (and dogs!) to sort out back at the base, but we had plenty of time and used a big garage to layout and dry all the gear. After saying goodbye to our dogs, we had a hot meal inside and some of us made use of the hot showers. Our transfer bus, got stuck in the snow and took a while to get dugout.

While it was being 'recovered', we helped to move a new delivery of dog food. It was in 18kg bags and we used the skidoo trailer to move it to the shed, once we'd loaded it by hand. One student did the calculations and by the time we'd finished, we'd shifted a tonne of dog food! We began to think, they'd got the bus stuck on purpose! Ha Ha! Helped us stay warm at least while we waited!

In Kiruna, we had a delicious dinner of Raindeer Burgers inside a giant tepee, with a warming fire inside, which was the perfect way to finish the sledding section of the expedition. It's been a great adventure with some really great students. Sleep came easily....
