Plas y Brenin Climbing Wall

Finally got the chance to check out the new climbing wall at Plas y Brenin today. It's been a long time coming, but on a torrentially wet day, accompanied by gale-force winds, it seemed reasonable to head there during daylight hours. Everything is super fresh inside, including all the holds, which are grippy as corse sandpaper. They've obviously spent a bit of money on the place, including a few extra frills, like lights that change colour every few minutes (kind of cool?!) and at least eight CCTV cameras (kind of un-nerving!).

The classic archway is sadly gone, but one thing that has remained the same is the price - a very reasonable five quid. The lead walls are not as steep, but the route have been nicely set to give plenty of grade options - one of which is a very comfortable and fun hand jamming feature.

There's also a pretty techno 'hardwood holds' training area. Using the screen on the side, you can program different routes to 'light up' with LEDs embedded in the holds. Gone are the days of gaffa tape and marker pens!

It looks like there's still a bit of work to be done around the edges (there's nowhere to sit/put your bags at the moment and the classic jukebox is still absent), and currently, it's only open 9-5pm, but there was talk of evening openings happening 'in the future'....
I'm looking forward to some more sessions there in the future - it's a great facility, and for a fiver, it's well worth dropping in for a quick session.
