With a damp start and only the slightest of indications of a drier afternoon, my group and I 'employed our adventurous spirit' (as one student said), and set off into the woods to find the cliff of Clogwyn Cyrau above Betws y Coed. Given the forecast, it was the most sheltered place and the crag most likely to catch any glimpses of sunshine.
It was almost a good plan and even after sitting out a heavy shower on arrival, we set off optimistically. However, having bashed our way through the damp and drip laden woodland, first feet became wet, then trouser bottoms, then sleeves and eventually group morale began to slip. Another heavy burst of rain convinced us that the search for dry rock was over and we returned to the mini-bus looking like we'd just climbed out of the river.
An adventure had been had, but there was no climbing glory to report, so we headed indoors to the climbing wall at nearby Plas y Brenin. Luckily for us, we were the only users so had a really productive afternoon of climbing and bouldering (as the skies outside began to clear!). All in all, we'd had a great day and as I reminded the team as I said goodbye - the lesson is called 'Outdoor Education' afterall...
