Snorkelling Solitude at Heron Bay

We might not be in the Alps, but given the intensity of the climbing recently and the skin shredding nature of the rock, we declared that an alpine rest day was in order. The 'ARD' is basically a designated day of relaxation involving low stress activities and eating and drinking in large quantities in order to restock the body, mind and spirit. I feel that we managed all of this in the finest of style today! And it all began with a pre-breakfast swim in the sea.

Once suitably refreshed from the ocean, we walked along the prom to our favourite café. Somewhat unbelievably, in between all the traditional stops and 'old style' restaurants, there is a trendy coffee shop! Very out of keeping with everything else, but we were not complaining about having a fine brew and croissants by the waters edge for breakfast.

This fuelled us up enough for a trek along the higher coastal path, which we joined after a ten minute drive to get away from town. Beyond this lone olive tree, we saw no one for the rest of the day - just miles of deserted picturesque coastline. Magic.

We had intended to reach a bay that we'd located from google maps, but the path took us too high above it and we realised that we'd need a boat to be able to reach the beach!

A lower path was then located which took us tantalisingly close to the wonderful coloured waters.

Then, we stopped the perfect little deserted beach. A heron took off and flew across the bay, so we named it Heron Bay.

The rocks on the beach were too hot to stand on barefoot! In the water, the visibility was incredible - I could see maybe 50m or so in every direction. There were loads of fish - including a really long skinny one and some orange annenomies, which disappeared into white tubes if approached.

We floated around most of this bay during the afternoon.

Even though it was still hot, the water had chilled us down enough to need jumpers on the walk back.

Near where we'd left the car, there was a beach café, which served us up some little après-snorkel snacks.

The car had practically melted by the time we got back to it!

Back home, we showered, changed and walked down to the marina in search of more food.

This time we splashed out a bit and took a table by the water and a glass of local wine - produced only 4km away!

As well as wine, there were many courses of nice things!

And of course fish! - Although we opted for something a bit smaller.

It was a beautiful evening to be by the beach and what was pretty much our own private dining experience!

A meal that finished with Turkish Tea, which is actually quite nice!

On the way home, we stopped for desert at the same café that we'd been to in the morning just to round things off!
