It's been another great Sunday for some winter mountain walking in snowy Snowdonia. Not as sunny as last week, but much more in the way of snow today!
It's a long hike out from the village of Racub to Bera Bach, but the ascent is gradual and never too hard. It's another pretty wild part of the Carneddau where you are unlikely to meet many/any other walkers (just a few wild ponies). With it's fresh covering of snow, it looked and felt like an entirely new mountain range as we made steady uphill progress through the morning.
The rocky summit gave some great scrambling - even though it was only short lived, it felt quite exciting putting up tracks through the short gully.
On top, we had great views out along the coast, but less so in land.
Everything was well rimed up with ice, but we never needed to use our crampons - the snow was soft enough to kick though. We took in the summit of Drosgyl on the descent. It was only a short distance away, but a thin crust on the snow slowed us down as we continually broke through it up to our shins.
As we were descending, I was surprised to clearly see the outline of the Isle of Man on the horizon. The air was so clear, it looked amazingly close! (you might just see it, if you zoom in on the photo below?!)...
I'll admit to being a bit tired by the time we'd hiked back down to the van, but it had been a great day out. Nice to be visiting the 'less frequented' areas of Snowdonia. They might not be as well known, but they are certainly good! I was glad to show The Cottage fireside some appreciation in the evening...
