Slab Climbing at Passo Fedaia

The alarm went off at 5.30am this morning, with the intention of us making a dawn ascent of the Sella Towers. But overcast skies and forecasts of imminent, thunder, lightening and rainfall, sent us back to bed after a short debate! I don't mind risking a rain shower, but you can't dodge a lightning strike!

Typically, when we awoke later in the morning, the skies had actually cleared a little! With all the forecasts promising storms, but with the skies still looking ok, we headed up to the Passo Fedia, where sheltered slabs and a short walk in meany that we could escape easily should the weather deteriorate.

It was only a short drive and a 15 minute hike to some fantastic slab routes. The only fault was that they didn't continue further upwards. The pitches were about 30m up to a lower-off chain, but the slab swept onwards and upwards for at least another 100m of what looked like great climbing! A project for someone no doubt!

After a few routes, the skies finally began to darken and the rain drops began to fall...

We scampered back to the van before the worst of the downpour hit, then sat in the back watching the bolts of lightning come flickering down on the mountain tops!

We retreated back to base, where we were amazed to find the roads still dry! talk about an isolated shower!

There is an Outdoor Festival happening this weekend in our village, so we walked down to check out what was happening before the rains arrived here too! Climbing, skateboarding and slacklining are all on the agenda for tomorrow. What more could we ask for!
