Mountain Leader

With a certain amount of wheel spinning and high revs, we got the minibus high up into the Carneddau today. The temperatures have started to drop and without direct sunlight, it was rather nippy up in the mountains.

It was my first full day out in the mountains with a group since the start of March! Quite incredible - the time has flown by. It felt good to be up there with a keen little bunch of lads. In the end, we opted for more 'exploration' - hopping over boulders and climbing small rocky bluffs that gaining our intended summit of Moel Eilio. This lent itself well to plenty of view admiration and chat about the landscape.

A short shower blew through, in the mid-afternoon, but only enough to produce a short rainbow and not enough to warrant getting out waterproofs on for. Given that we were having a discussion on the concept of Awe and Wonder, it was a well-timed phenomenon.

With our masks on, we managed a bit of map and compass work too. One student, who is from Hong-Kong, taught us a bit of Chinese too when we used his compass!

With a weather warning on the way, it seemed a shame not to make the most of the dry evening. I could easily have headed for the sofa as I was pretty tired, once I'd got back to base, but Dave was also keen to go for a climb, so we made it to the slate quarries for the last hour or so of day light. Last time I climbed this route, I decided that it was a bit too bold for me these days. Dave however, with his nerves of steel, decided to go for it. He's still a few moves away from the first bolt protection. Delicate climbing that certainly keeps you concentrating! I was happy to have the rope above me again!

Good (if slightly exhausting) to be walking back to the van in the dark,,,
