A Mini-Expedition in Canoes

I think today was likely to be my last day on the water in canoes of 2019. The weather has been superb, with fantastic clarity, but cold temperatures. The wind was due to pick up during the day, but we made the most of the calm morning and set off on a mini journey, with some barrels packed up with supplies to provide a comfortable lunch camp.
Before reaching our chosen landing spot, we came across some well dried out driftwood, so loaded up our boats so that we could get a campfire going once on land. It was just the right day for such a thing and we huddled around for warmth and did our best to toast some pop-corn, but it always seemed to come out a bit 'flame-grilled'.

Between some gusty moments, after clearing the beach to leave no trace, we paddled back to where we had started from. Even though it looks pretty warm in the photos, some of my students can testify that the water is very cold - as they found out first hand, after peering a little too far over the side of the canoe! Opps!
