Paddleboard, Snorkel & Hike - Lanikai Beach

The storm must have finally passed by during the night, because blue sky ruled again this morning.

We took the paddle board out for a spin before breakfast which was great fun. While we were out we saw a load of big fish jumping out of the water. Jumping for joy? Or being chased by sharks I wondered?! We took turns displaying our balance skills...

But there were plenty of splash downs.

Walking further down the coast after breakfast the effects of the storm were suddenly more noticeable. The trickle of yesterday’s clear water river had turned to a thick red flow as it transported sediment from the hills and fields. The colours merged dramatically where the river water met the sea.

It was a beautiful day for a walk, so we followed the coastal paths towards Lanikai beach.

To begin with, it was too hot to consider the hike to the view point, so we went snorkelling in the crystal clear waters past the headland. We saw loads of colourful fish and strange shaped corals.

This activity cooled us down enough to take on the ‘Pillbox’ hike.

It led up along a thin ridge towards the old wartime lookout posts. The rock, which was (obviously!) volcanic lava, had loads of cool shapes where it had weathered.

The view from the top was worth a bit of sweating.

We could see across to the next bay as well as over to some of the other Hawaiian Islands in the distance.

And below us, the beautiful coloured water of the reef where we had just snorkelled.

We followed the coast road back to Kailua, but stopped near the marker to enjoy the views of the bay.

By the time we crossed the river back to Kailua the sun was setting on another fine day.
