Refugio Poqueira, 2500m

There's an amazing village bakery in Capileira, so after a breakfast of Omlette and Coffee, we watched some fresh loaves being pulled from the wood fires oven. It smelled amazing in there! Perfect sandwich material.

After a slightly un-nerving drive upto 2000m or so and the start of the trail head, we finally set off on our main hike. The last part of the road was not tarmac, but in relatively good condition. The hire van did a good job, but it's  now coated in a thick layer of dust! It was really hot by now, but the trek started in the cool of the forest, which was a relief.

Then, just after midday, we were out onto the open mountain side.

The ground was carpeted thickly in yellow flowers, despite the barren looking ground.

At the last set of trees (and therefore last shade), we made our sandwiches and enjoyed a leisurely lunch in the cool, by a small stream.

As we neared the Refugio, we saw quite a few chamois and had an amazing overhead fly by from an eagle!

Once we'd checked into the hut, we could take off our sweaty boots and enjoyed a cold can on the terrace. It's cool and dark inside the hut and they have a nice range of pink crocs for hut slippers!

They serve dinner late here (well, it is Spain, so they probably thought it early) at 20:30. It was worth the wait - a very nice four courses of soup, rice, chicken, then creme caramel. Before it was served, we took a gentle stroll above the hut to enjoy the last of the sunshine.

A bit of chess and a card game later and it was bed time. The guys all snuggled onto the bottom bunk as Aled and I pulled rank and claimed the top to ourselves!
