Barefoot to Llanddwyn Island

Even on a rather bleak and dreary day, the vast expanse of Newbrough Beach on Anglesey is still a pretty cool place to spend the day.

Our planned 'Adventure Challenge Day' got a bit more adventure than we bargained for, when it became apparent that low water was actually at midnight and not at noon. Whoops. Who planned this?! Sheepish looks all round. At first it looked like the planned activities around Llanddwyn Island would have to be re-routed to somewhere in the nearby forest. That was until some students in Wellies made it across the channel with only 'minor breaches' of their dry socks.

But the tide was coming in fast, so by the time I arrived with the last of the pupils, the water was well over wellie depth. Nothing for it but to roll up the trousers, remove boots and go for it.

It was ok to start with, but painfully cold once above knee height! Everyone was laughing once we were all safely across and the numbness had subsided.

The crossing meant that we were committed to a bit of Island time and complete the activities. It also meant that we'd miss a bit of the planned afternoon programming, but as with all good plans, we remained flexible.

It was a day to remember for the pupils - a memorable shared experience - exactly the kind of spur of the moment adventures that we work hard to facilitate for them. I think next time we'll keep the adventure element and plan to come at high tide (and I'll wear wellies!!)...
