Arctic Carnedd y Filiast

There was a real arctic feel in the mountains today. After over a week of having not a breath of wind in the hills, today we were greeted with a bitterly cold Easterly gale as we set off above The Cottage, up Carnedd y Filiast. The glorious blue skies were deceptive. The wind not only consistently tried to blow us over, it also froze our faces! There was a wind chill of at least minus ten degrees celsius.

After almost turning back a couple of times, we pushed on up to the summit, where the views were superb. The air quality and visibility were crystal clear.

It was almost impossible to stand on the summit, so we found some shelter in the lee of the summit and enjoyed the views in the sunshine, out of the biting wind, huddled together with our big jackets on.

With the wind behind us, the descent was much more enjoyable and very fast! We were back at The Cottage for lunch, after which I had a quick change of gear and set off for the second part of my day - on the much calmer Menai Straits...
