Aberfalls and Moel Winion

With 61mm of rain falling within 18 hours yesterday at The Cottage, it was hardly surprising that there was a bit of water pouring off the mountains today!

A brief 'window' in the recent weather of persistent gales and rain, meant that us mountaineering instructor types had the chance to leave the indoor climbing walls and get up the mountains in reasonable conditions today! The roads and fields were full of water still, so rather than journey into trouble the heart of Snowdonia, I took my group of walkers up to see 'Aberfalls' up on the northern edge of the park.

The force of the water was impressive! Fully waterproofed up, we got as close as we physically could/dared which was exhilarating and soaking! The path up the side of the falls looked too dangerous with many 'new' streams, so we hiked across to the next valley and made an ascent of nearby Moel Winion (580m).

You get a great view of Snowdonia, the peaks of the Lleyn and Anglesey from the summit, which we enjoyed along with the fact that the winds had finally abated (for a while at least!).

The mountain sides are totally saturated still though, so walking 'off path' was a test of everyones boot waterproofness!

It turned into a lovely circular route, which rather fortunately passed by the cafe in Abergryngregwn, where we stopped for strictly 'hydration purposes'! We even saw (for the first time in days!) a bit of blue sky...
