The Variety of The Tour

It’s been a day of contrasts and variety on the tour today. A fine next of luxury and rough and ready with a bit of everything in between. The luxury of waking up in a comfy bed and enjoying a walk-in shower started us off nicely. The day was bright but much cooler as we set of in a southerly direction through Münster.

We hadn’t got far when we stopped to see the ‘See’ or city lake.

While we were on a brief break, Clare got an exciting email about the possibility of some overseas work later in the year. Business Class travel seemed a long way from our current mode of transportation but it was a very exciting exchange of emails! The outdoor office!

The cycle track was a pleasant one as it worked its way out of the city. Everyone was very law abiding as we waited for the lights to change at these road works, despite the absence of any traffic or workers! We queued up anyway!

A final underpass delivered us back into farmlands of golden corn ready for harvesting and tall crops of maise.

Plenty of big windmills here too, but newer than the ones in Holland.

Had a few wildlife encounters too. A family of goats were getting stuck into the hedgerow…

The church in Havixbeck, gave some good shade for a great lunch and a few moments rest.

Soon after, we stopped at an old castle and saw a turtle in the most among the lillies.

This brought us out by the river/canal. We got the tarp out here and had a rest while watching some huge barges passed us by.

Lots of Canadian Geese joined us before we moved on.

Finally we arrived at a campground near Lüdinghausen, which was described on Google as ‘a bit creepy, but with a friendly owner. Given the very limited choice, we went with it and it was just as described! There didn’t seem to be anywhere for tents - only a ramshackled assortment of semi-permanent caravans and sheds. However, after a bit of searching, found the correct person to talk to, and were assured that there was room for us. It turned out to be in someone’s back garden - complete with gnomes and a lifesize stone penguin as well as a non-English speaking family (owners of the garden) on the terrace next to us. It was all very strange to us but once we’d been led there and a few euros exchanged, we were left  alone to relax and cook dinner.

It was a bonkers place to camp and a wild contrast from the luxurious city apartment that we’d left that morning. As we say though, ‘it’s all part of the tour’! Before bed we walked to the waters edge and saw an otter (or beaver type thing) and some Chinese Swan Geese. All rather lovely.

Total Ride: 35km
(Münster to Lüddinghausen)
