Sheep's Head & Snorkelling

We've meandered our way down into Connty Cork, where the weather has been a little damp of late. We did our best to check out some of the viewpoints along the winding coast road that leads out to Sheep's Point, but didn't manage to get too many panoramic photos as our guidebook suggested we might.

We did scamper up onto one of the highpoints of the Peninsula at Seefin, in case we could get above the cloud, but it was not to be this time.

We did find a very sheltered little hidden little harbour on the south coast, where we spent the night in the van.

We planned on waking up and getting straight into the sea for a pre-breakfast snorkel, but awoke to the sound of heavy rain hammering down on the roof of the van, while the wind rocked us from side to side. The previously clear water of the sheltered bay was looking much darker and less appealing, so we stayed put - huddled in the van while the worst of the storm passed over.

Eventually, we got ourselves up and out into the day and drove east to Lough Hyne, which was reputed to be another good snorkelling destination. The wind was making it too choppy at the Lough, so we drove around to the seaward end, where we had just enough visibility to see Bullock Island.

The water was much more sheltered though, so seeing how it was already a wet day, a swim in the sea seemed the best option.

With snorkels on we, looked around the bay, but the water was a bit too churned up to see much more that a few fish. Still, it was good to do something on such a dull afternoon!

The snorkelling might not have been that good, but the small harbour wall provided a superb take-off for a hilarious jumping in contest!

Once, packed up and dried off, we continued the drive over to a small village called Union Hall, which felt like another world. Clare had found us a superb B&B, so we were able to shower off and freshen up before walking in the evening sunshine along the seafront - where we also happened across a nice place to have a drink and some food.

Walking back to the house felt a bit like being on the French Riviera suddenly, with blue skies and palm trees lining the way!

The view from tonight's bed is a world away from last night's! Nice to be able to appreciate all levels of accommodation on this trip!
