When I was encouraging my group of students to 'get stuck in' to the challenge of an exploratory hike up, over, and around the magnificent miniature mountain of Moel y Ci, they quite literally did as I asked...
Between the (easily avoidable, yet compellingly attractive) deep mud pools, we hiked around the base of the peak, through the dense forest to keep out of the cold winds.
Then we set off on a summit bid, up the steeper section of the open hill side, so that we could enjoy the far-reaching views.
The main bulk of Snowdonia was hidden under a blanket of cloud, but our peak (and this was not purely coincidental - there had been some planning involved!), remained cloud free and boasting splendid views in the afternoon light. From the top trig point (which is unusual in that it's 12m lower than the highest point - 410m), we could still see Holyhead mountain to the north and the summit of the Great Orme over to the east.
