Milestone Buttress Scramble

With a few hours free this afternoon, I returned to the West Face of Tryfan for a scramble with Clare across Milestone Buttress. A brilliant little route, with plenty of exposure.

The rock was dry, despite a sudden shower when we arrived. Having just got out of the car, big drops of rain started falling, so we beat a retreat and waited it out for ten minutes before making a second attempt!

As we reached the base of the climb a Hercules flew overhead. It seemed to be moving too slowly and too low to stay airborne as it banked around into the Nant Ffrancon. How do they stay up there?!...

With only a 30m rope, we move quickly in short pitches across the cliffs and up onto the top of the crags. We descended the Milestone Gully instead of walking off. It seemed like a good idea until I remembered that it had rained all day yesterday and parts of the gully was puring with cold water run-off. Had numb fingers by the time we got down.
