A Christmas Eve Cycle Tour

Winter cycle touring is certainly a different experience from our usual summer vibe. Fresh snow on the mountain tops meant that I was decked out in my biggest gloves and belay jacket - usually reserved for arctic ice climbing adventures! Despite some early morning heavy hail showers, we decided to go for it and luckily stayed dry all day as we explored over towards the Conwy Valley.

Although we traveled mostly on the roads, we picked a route that involved the ones less taken by cars, so only had the odd tractor and landrover to dodge en-route.

Having dropped down a very steep road into Trefriw in the Conwy Valley, we picked up a cycle route that took us over the river via the old toll bridge. It used to cost one pence for pedestrians, and tuppence for cyclists, but these days it's toll-free!

We stopped for a drink in the town square at Llanwrst, then ticked another classic North Wales tourist sight - the hairy house - as we crossed back over the river on the old stone bridge.

Having enjoyed the long downhill into Trefriw earlier, we then had to gain all the height back with a grueling climb back over the mountain. At Nant BH we stopped for a breather before the final push.

Take-out chips from Pete's Eats gave us some much-needed sustenance and some Christmas wishes from a couple of friendly faces saw us on the last section home with a beautiful sunset glowing soft light across the mountainsides.

A wonderful Christmas eve adventure making the most of what the local area has to offer.
