Outside it was already 26°C when we ventured out at 10:30. Eventually, after a crowded bank holiday style tussle in the supermarket, we made our way out of Györ, via the industrial and less pretty side of town.
We took a short stop in a village that had an open bakery and purchased a roll with a sausage baked in it, before continuing on alongside the railway. The trail turned to a dirt track for a bit, but thankfully, it was dusty and dry rather than the mud fest that a rain shower would have turned it into.
We passed our first horse and cart in another village.
And after another section along the edge of ploughed fields, we arrived in the town of Komárom.
Not much to see except the welcome sign as far as we could tell.
The town used to span the river, but after the war, it got divided as the river now marks the boarder.
We crossed back into Slovakia, to Komarno, where we would be staying the night.
It’s not exactly high in the ‘places to visit in Slovakia’ and the volume and availability of accommodation is reflected in this fact.
After much hilarity, we checked into the salubrious ‘Hotel Bow Garden’, which has its own two lane bowling alley and 24-7 pumping 80’s tunes - should that be a selling point to anyone...
A hot shower and a short walk later and we found a restaurant serving local style grub, so took a gamble on what turned out to be a kind of Sheperds Pie in a baked pancake. Along with a few drinks, a salad and an ‘egg and potatoes bake’, the bill came to €16, so we were more than happy to leave well fed and watered.
Justifiably a bit tired after finding that we’d done more mileage than we’d estimated.
Day 4: 64.3km
