What a sleep. I dragged myself out of the deepest slumber this morning, even having gone to bed early last night. My body felt like I’d got some sleep deficits that needed repaying. Making the most of our last ‘indoor luxury’ area for a while, we did our final bits of packing and enjoyed a big breakfast.
After negotiating the lift (quite tricky with bikes and a studio apartment on the eighth floor), we posted the key through the letter box and were officially ‘on tour’. We now carried no keys and no wallet. Just us, the bikes, two panniers each and a debt card. It felt great. Our first stop off was Malmö town square. It was very picturesque and also home to a big outdoor store where we bought gas for the stove.
Getting out of the town was relatively easy as there was a cycle route the entire way. It was quite an industrial area, but the factories and docks soon gave way to corn filled fields.
The cycle path reached the coast a short distance out of town and we stopped for a rest to see the views. If you look closely in the photo below, you can see ‘the bridge’ that connects Denmark to Sweden - the same one that we had travelled over by train yesterday.
Heading north, the cycle path alternated between coast and main road and on the whole, was splendidly flat.
We stopped for a picnic at the town of Löddeköpinge (nick named Loddington by us!). We’d just finished eating when a few drops of rain began to fall! The first that we’ve seen in weeks! We scuttled over to the nearby shopping centre to shelter, but thankfully, it didn’t amount to much and we could continue onwards. At this point we’d travelled about 35km and knew that the next to Campsite’s were either 2km or another 30km. We chose the closer! It’s day one back on the bike after all. As it happened though, Clare found a really nice beachside place to camp, just short of the campsite we were aiming for.
Pulling over on the nice flat, grassy area, we got our thermarest chairs out, had a brew and then I fell fast asleep!
I was obviously still pretty tired. I had however got up at 3am twice in the last week. We enjoyed the warmth of the sun as we lazed on the tarp, eating, drinking and listening to a book. In the distance, we could see the coast of Denmark and when we looked on the map, the town where we had finish our tour last summer was directly opposite us.
It’s free to camp in Sweden, anywhere away from buildings, so if we can find some more little gems like this along the way, we’ll do just fine.
Distance: 37.7Km
