Beachside to the Coire Fionnaraich Bothy

Well boys will be boys. What better to do on a cold and overcast December morning in Scotland....

...than walk down to the Loch shore and go for a quick dip! I didn’t go ‘head under’ so my effort was considered null and void, but fair play to the lads who did. Was bracing to say the least.

It woke us up if nothing else.

After a hot shower and packing up the bunkhouse, we travelled east back past Strathcarron and hiked up to a little bothy called Coire Fionnaraich.

The weather was very variable, with snow showers blowing through and bright sunshine inbetween.

It was a steady hours walk up. The intention had been to try and climb the peak behind, but the rigors of mountaineering in Scotland had taken their toll on a few of the group.

We’d come prepared with a big sack of fire wood, so let ourselves in and got to work toasting some cheese sandwiches on the stove top.

After a hilarious game of hide and seek, a vote was cast and it was decided to head back down after lunch via a lengthy snowball fight.

When the clouds parted, the mountains looked stunning with the sun shining on them. We really have had some great conditions - Today was the first and only day on this trip that I’d put my waterproof coat on!

A mamoth kit sorting session took place back at the bus as we prepared to begin our journey south. After dropping one student in Dingwall, we dined in Aviemore and eventually got to Glasgow Airport just after 11pm, where we all went straight to sleep. Shattered.
