Cycle Touring in Denmark

Since leaving the van, we've journeyed east across Europe to Copenhagen via shuttle bus, aeroplane and a good portion of walking...

A delayed flight meant that it was a late arrival to the house that we had rented a bedroom in. We still got a warm welcome from the owner, but declined the offer of drinks in favour of a comfy bed...

The house owner gave us breakfast, then we went out and caught the bus to Copenhagen Central station. The roads are twice as wide as back home to allow for spacious cycle lanes.

Two train rides later and we were almost at Svendborg on the south coast...

Finally, a short walk from the station at Svendborg took us to the harbour and our agreed meeting point for the guy we had hopefully hired our bikes from?!...

Just like clockwork, as we arrived a young guy approached us and asked if we were the guys from Wales who wanted some bikes! He produced two amazing looking bikes from the back of his van, showed us how to fit the panniers shook our hands and then left! Left all alone on the dockside, we were grinning ear to ear - especially as it soon became clear that all the gear was going to fit on ok.

Half an hour later and all that was left to do, was change into our biking gear, load up and peddle off! The whole thing was ridiculously exciting!

Before leaving town we had a few jobs to do, like purchasing some gas, food and bits and bobs. We'd found out in advance where to buy stuff from, so it was just a case of getting there by bike. Thankful, cycling with the panniers on was much easier than we'd anticipated and it didn't take long.

Then it was back down to the waters edge where we had to catch the ferry to Aero. It leaves every hour and just by luck, it was pulling in as we arrived. We were the only people with bikes so joined in the que with the motorcyclists.

The ferry ride was about 90 minutes of smooth crossing. After all the travel so far, we were pretty tired, so the time went quickly between watching passing sailing boats and dozing. On arrival at the Island of Aero, we only had a five minute ride to a nice campsite, where we put up our new 'ultra-light' tent for the first time.

Even through the water was warm, we only had the energy left for a paddle that evening. As darkness fell, we happily snuggled into our sleeping bags and were asleep in no time...

So since picking up the bikes (including the ferry crossing), we've travelled 31.4km. The journey has begun!
