Navigation Training

I've been out with a group of students today on an introduction to 'DofE' expedition navigation. It was a very wet and dull start as we explored a new area on the hillside above Colwyn Bay that I'd never visited before. We took shelter in the woods to begin with, where we found a peculiar a felled tree, with a weird 'square' shape running through the whole tree.

And a lot of fungi!

It was as challenging for me as it was the group as we navigated down through the valley and into some dense woodlands. Quite often navigation is easier out on the open mountain side compared to small fields and footpaths! But at least the little yellow signs help down here!

Once out, above the woods, the clouds lifted and we had wonderful views of the coast line and in the distance could even see Puffin Island over by Anglesey. There must be thousands of wind turbines out to sea on the horizon now as well. It's like they are mating or something! It was really refreshing viewing a familiar landscape from a different angle. I'll be heading back out that way in future.
