Surfing at Crescent Head

During the course of our journey, we've met several people who've all recommended going for a surf at a place called 'Crescent Head'. So today, we took the turn off the Pacific Highway, and went to see what was there...

It's a beautiful kind of sleepy hollow, with a long beach next to a smaller bay and headland. There's a little town there too, that looked mostly to be comprised of holiday homes. All around the car park were these punk like birds..

Stepping out of the van, we were greeted by a huge pod of dolphins who were making their way across the bay. We watched them as we walked out to the headland, where once again we saw the distant flip and splash of a whale out to sea.

It was clear that on a good day, this must be a fantastic point break to surf, but with the tide out and not much swell, we decided that it wasn't worth getting in for at this time.

We sat and watched for a while and almost decided to drive up to the next beach that we'd identified as wanting to stop at. However, after remembering the scale of this vast country and realising that 'nipping up to the next spot' was actually going to involve a two hour drive, we decided to get in at the crescent beach break instead!

The waves were gentle there, and we only had to share them with one other friendly surfer and a bunch of Pelicans, so we were very happy.

And once again, we revelled in the ability to brew up and dry out afterwards!

We drove a few hours north before dusk, stopping off to get the view from Nambooka Head. A local guy said to enjoy the views and 'hold on the the memories' as there's a storm on the way!

Made it as far as Satwell and pulled into camp as the first rain drops started to fall...
