Today is Swiss National Day - a public holiday, and a great excuse to let off some fireworks. For us, it's a fitting finale to a most splendid July spent in the country and feels like a bit of a 'send off'. Tomorrow we say goodbye to Switzerland and are off to Italy, then to Corsica, by ferry for a change of scene and the next phase of the summer adventures.

This evening has seen plenty of Alpenhorn action, flag waving and singing of the National Anthem, but the real excitement has been the fireworks! No health and safety crew needed here! As well as getting a very impressive fire blazing in the valley, the patriotic crowds all turned up with their own fireworks! That's right, young and old spent a riotous few hours letting off bangers, rockets, flares and other such incendiary devices in true amateur style ! Carnage! Amazingly, no-one seemed remotely bothered as rockets whistled by at alarmingly low angles!

But all this was not without a final bit of climbing beforehand. We spent an excellent afternoon up in the Bernina Pass climbing a three pitch route called Lagalp Kante (4c), which goes up the edge of a decent sized cliff and was great fun. Rain threaten to engulf us half way up the route, but a sudden change in wind direction saved us, and we finished the route in the sun! Plenty of wildlife spotting today as well - there were a couple of Alpine Chuffs giving a Kestral some hassle on the neighbouring cliff and all three gave us an impressive display of aerial manoeuvres. On the way down we saw also saw a Marmot!
