Border Crossings

Ten hours and seven hundred kilometres later...

We’ve had several plans up our sleeves for expeditioning over the coming weeks. It’s been difficult to come up with a satisfactory balance of the right level of safety, risk, responsibility and enjoyment.   Having weighed up all the pros and cons of several destinations, we set out from The Cottage after breakfast and drove directly to the channel tunnel. It was quite a shock stopping in England at a service station where face masks are compulsory. It was a very strange vibe. The tunnel train had only a handful of cars on it and must be running at a fraction of it’s capacity. After a twenty-five minute train ride, we drove off onto French tarmac and heading west instead of our usual southerly alpine direction.

After a fast hour on the toll road, the sat nav took us on a crazy back road for the final half hour, through some ‘scenic’ terrain! Before sunset, we arrived at the small coastal town of Ault. Here the ‘white cliffs of Dover’ are mirrored, facing back at the UK.

All is quiet and chilled and as hoped, there are very few people about. We’ve got a really nice B&B here to spend a couple of nights in while we rest, relax and get a feel for the area. Pretty soon, we’ll be strimming life down to the bare essentials of all that we can carry and setting out by bike for some simple living...
