When I sent out the kit list for this winter mountaineering expedition, I was laughed at for having sun cream on the kit list - well look who’s laughing now!
We really are being exceptionally lucky with the weather. By having a slight lie-in, we missed the morning clouds and had a big breakfast, built a snow man and got ready while the skies cleared.
Driving north towards Torridon was breathtaking. The roads were passable; just. And with care!
We climbed a small peak called Meallen Gobhar (297m), above Loch Damh, to get the best possible views of the area. Was only an hour up to the summit.
We were looking directly across at the huge cliffs of Ben Bhan. The winter climbing looked fantastic!
The sun remained low in the sky all day.
After a sun soaked lunch, it was time to descend and drive further north to explore some more. We walked down a different way, so we could do a traverse of the mountain. Nick returned to the bus and drove around to meet us at the road side.
As we approached the road we got a crystal clear reflection of the peaks on the other side of the glen.
Then later while driving, an even better one. Can you tell which way up this should be?
The peaks of Torridon and Ben Alligin soon came into view. They looked enormous!
The water in the sea Loch was so still. As we stopped to look, a sea otter popped up and did a little flip!
We scoped out various routes and potential peaks for the coming days as well as more technical climbs for a different trip. There really is so much to do here!
On the drive back, we stopped off at the only pub/settlement for miles around. We had a hot chocolate and enjoyed some fireside banter over a game of darts with some friendly locals. I stunned the students with a bulls-eye and total score of 139 with only 3 darts! Some might say it was a fluke?!... Or just a well rounded education!?...
