Climbing at Sennen

Cornish Golden Granite! As we drove down the hill to Sennen Cove, the water was the inviting turquoise colour that I remembered from past visits. It all looked very tranquil. A bit too tranquil to be honest; there was not a wave in sight! Not even a ripple. Surfing was clearly off the menu.

The day had started wet, so before checking the beach, we went for morning tea with Bob and Janet in Penzance. Afterwards, as we started commiserating about the lack of surf, we bumped into our old friends (from when we used to live in these southern parts) 'Mossy and Hannah' in the car park. Easily distinctive in their van, laiden with sea kayaks. We had a good old natter and caught up with the news from the outdoor industry in the south west. By the time we waved them off, the sun was making an appearance, so we walked over to the cliffs to do a climb.

As luck would have it, the crag was deserted apart from a small team who let us abseil in on their fixed rope. Thanks! Given the choice of routes, we did the classic 'Demo Route' HS (4b), which was just as good as we remembered.

The rock here is just brilliant. Massive crystals, great flakes and huge hand holds.

From the crag top you get a great view of Lands End.

After deciding to do a second route, a big army team turned up at the cliff top, but luckily they were beginners, so there were still plenty of routes free for us. We did two other routes and although the rain threatened for a bit, it amounted to nothing and dried back up quickly

Having had our fix of climbs, we brewed up in the back of the van and made some use of our new sofa while we dried out the wetsuits and soaked up the view.
