San Vito by Bike

Sun flooded through the curtains and into my eyes this morning. Warmth and light; a nice way to wake up. We decided to get up and into the sunshine by taking a quick tour of the town on the bikes that are available for us to use, here at the flat.

The rusty, dry chains creaked, the brakes rubbed and we dared not change gear, but it still felt great to be moving in the morning sun under our own 'peddle power'. By bike, the beach was only a minute away, so we turned north and followed the coast under the dark peaks of Monte Monaco.

The climbing on these bigger cliffs appeals as they are all long and adventurous. But being north facing means that at this time of year, they are shady, cold and much less appealing. Another plan for another trip files it's self into the back of my mind.

On the beach, the water is almost irresistible, but we are not prepared with towels etc, so return to base for supplies.

Before taking a dip, we head around to the lighthouse at the far end of the bay, where the view back over the dark peaks gives a different perspective of where we are. Our house is near the sea, below the right hand peak.

Rocky shores and sea urchins put us off swimming by the lighthouse. Instead, we sun bath, chat, plot and plan.

The afternoon slips by and with it, our chances of a swim, so we peddle back to the sandy beach to 'dip our toes in' before we are too late.

With long shadows heading across the beach, we need to be quick if we are to swim and avoid hypothermia. No time for hesitation. Clare is straight in, which means I have to follow suit.

Clare defiantly gets the 'swim' tick'. I got a dive and a stroke in before beating a hasty retreat. That still counts in my book.

Hot showers are a short bike ride away and as numb feet warm up, the dark cliffs of Monte Monaco glow gold in the setting sun.
