Christmas Eve Travellers

I woke up with a jolt in an upright position, my head swinging wildly from side to side. I took a while to ascertain where we were. We'd arrived at Heathrow on schedule and had had the good fortune of being ushered (by mistake!?) into a very short check-in queue, while another snaked around the entire terminal. We asked no questions and the airline even offered to check in my excessively heavy and hugely oversized 'hand luggage' free of charge as the flight was very full. Merry Christmas from Air Italtia! After sunrise above the clouds, the Dolomites passed by below us and we touched down in Milan for a few hours to swap planes (time consuming, but money saving)...

Having left London in a three degree drizzle, we were delighted to transition from plane to hire car, where the temperature read 18. The extended day of travel was paying off.

The last time we visited Sicily, we climbed and skied from Mt Etna. Luckily, we chose the opposite end of the island this year as soon after touching down in Palermo, airspace around Catania was closed as the volcano erupted in a spectacular fashion! We didn't see any of the drama, or feel the earthquakes and were unaware until a string of text messages arrived from friends and family in the UK. This pic was on the news later. We stayed in the town last time...
