Lake Taupo

Ultimate breakfast spot this morning (see pic above) on the quiet shores of Lake Taupo after a solid sleep. Our bodies were both feeling the effects of yesterday's excursions so a slow breakfast followed by a quick dip, seemed an appropriate start to the day.

After calling in at the Sir Edmond Hilary Outdoor Pursuits Centre to see a friend, (who turned out to be away in the South Island) we drove north up the eastern shore of the beautiful Lake Taupo. The views were fantastic and we could clearly see where we had hiked the previous day. Pulling over at a view point, we cooked tasty noodles for lunch.

In Taupo town, we got directions to the nearest 'freedom' campsite, then took an extended coffee stop at an outside cafe in the centre of town as neither of us was in a rush to do anything too active. We spent the afternoon on the lake shore swimming and snorkelling. There are hot springs near here but we're saving them for another day. Today was all about enjoying the lake, eating and resting.
As pointed out by the tourist office we are camped just out of town by the river this site is much busier (and noisier) but just as free as last night. Amazing really, as apart from the lack of showers it's much nicer than a lot of places we've paid to stay at in Europe!
