Champagne brunch, bikes and swims - How to start the new year

Out of bed, into the shower then straight round to the next door neighbours, for a glass of new year champagne and strawberries! The barby was fully loaded by the time we got there and before long we were tucking into bacon, ham, sausage, eggs and pancakes - washed down with a few more bubbles! A solid start to 2015 indeed!
Having met a few more folk from our street and been very well fed, we set off on bikes to nearby Lake Karapiro. There had been a really heavy rain storm in the night, but there was no trace of it this morning! It was a blue sky start to the year.

There is a beautifully smooth cycle track from Cambridge to the lake, which (apart from a few steep turns) was a pleasure to ride. We rode alongside lush green fields where race horses were grazing in well looked after estates that had long, tree lined drive ways. (This area is famous for breeding winning race horses).

The lake is used for rowing, water skiing and jet skiing, and looked particularly inviting. Unfortunately, swimming didn't seem to be allowed in most areas due to the motorised crafts coming and going. Not to be denied our New Year's Day swim, we nipped into the rowing club's private lawn and jetty and took a running jump into the cooling waters!

Before we got busted, we were back on our bikes and heading home - this time with a welcome tail wind!

After a toast and coffee session at home, we then set out on foot from the house to walk a short trail around the block that went along the 'Cambridge Tree Trail' which was not too dissimilar to being in Jurassic Park! Brilliant - and just a five minute walk from the house!

Utterly shattered now, and with an early start on the cards for tomorrow's adventures, I'm off to bed feeling very excited about the year ahead. A fine start to 2015...
