I’m spending this week in Mallorca with a group of students on a trekking expedition following a section of the ‘Grand Route’ GR221 long distance trail. It’s been a while since I worked using my International Mountain Leader qualification overseas, and it’s felt good to be back! Final packing and an evening flight got us into Palma late at night, after waving Clare off at Manchester Airport earlier in the morning, as she left to see the US crew.
A deep (but not long enough) sleep, breakfast then a series of public buses took us through Palma from a Hotel to the north coast.
With only a very short hiking section today, we had the luxury of taking our time, shopping for supplies and checking out Port du Soller.
And took the opportunity of a little swim in the sea! Much warmer than the Afon Ogwen!!
A great acclimatisation day, that has finished with a short walk around the headland to tonight’s Refuge. It’s a manned hut, so dinner is being provided tonight, which is good, but the 30 bed dorm is proving a bit of an eye opener for some! Hopefully there will not be too many snorers!
Tomorrow we set off in earnest into the mountains…
But for now we can rest, relax and play cards!
