Daear Ddu Ridge, Moel Siabod

We have our first Crocus out in the garden at The Cottage - a sure sign that Spring is on the way!

High pressure has briefly settled over Snowdonia, so Clare and I set out for a hike around Moel Siabod to catch up on each others news after a busy week or two, while getting some exercise. The good path got us easily up high and into the wilds from Capel Curig. The ridge always seems like a long way off and that's because it is! The last little boggy section was easily negotiated before joining the obvious ridge and heading upwards, with walking poles packed away. We picked out the most interesting way and were enjoying the views...

Until in the final 100m below the summit, the clouds rolled in...

The summit was freezing and we took shelter from the wind at the summit cairn while we ate a sandwich. Descent was at least with the wind on our backs as the wind chill was well below freezing.

There was ice on the ground to prove it.

We followed the ridge as the cloud blew through giving tantalizing glimpses of blue sky and sunshine.

Brokenspectors came and went with the mists and there was an eerie light.

One back below cloud level, things brighten up and more importantly, warmed up too!

The ridge gives super views of the whole national park.

And the famous lakes with the 'Beatrice Gap' below us.

It's a 10km round trip with over 700m of height gain, so we felt suitable tired and ready to get back to The Cottage, feeling pleased with our efforts.
