It's been another beauty day in the Ogwen Valley. Having spent too much time at the computer yesterday, we set out to try a climb that we'd not done on the west face of Tryfan. We managed to time things pretty well, by walking up from the A5, past Milestone Buttress in the cool shade and arriving at the base of the route just as the sun came onto the face! We linked together two scrambles, starting on 'V Arete' (Grade 3 Scramble).
Clare setting off up the 'V Arete' route |
'V Arete', was a good little route, although obviously not very frequented, as it involved a short pitch of heather bashing in between the good stuff! This took us up to what surely must be one of the best picnic spots in Ogwen!
The lunching platform! Tryfan West Face |
After a bit of light lunching we continued upwards across easy ground to join up with the finale of the day - 'Notch Rocks' (Diff/Grade 3 Scramble). I'd been eyeing up the route for ages, as it's a real prominent feature when you look up at Tryfan from Ogwen Cottage. For various reasons, we'd never made it up there, until now! It didn't disappoint.
The super buttress of Notch Rocks - 'Tryfan's Best Rock'!? |
Described in the guidebook as 'Tryfan's best rock', the only shame was that it didn't last longer! Climbing the left hand side of the buttress pumps up the grade to maybe V.Diff, but you can always nip over to the right to easier ground if it looks too hard.
Enjoying Notch Rock Buttress |
Splendid climbing on alpine style clean, solid, quality rock. Could have done with another few hundred meters of it though! All too soon, you join the North Ridge of Tryfan, which we followed upwards until we could nip down west gully and back to the car.
