Climbing on Tryfan Bach

Baltic but beautiful conditions in the valley. Just right for a late afternoon cycle and climb combo.

Having had to nip to Bangor in the morning, I've clocked up over 30km of biking today. The cycle track was mostly clear of walkers so was able to get down to the sea in twenty-five minutes. Possibly a record?

The journey up the Nant Ffrancon later in the afternoon felt great as the cold temperatures (there is a fresh dusting of snow on the higher summits) were combatted by the uphill effort of the cycle. The roads were pretty clear, although a fast over taking car passed us on the way home, almost brushing my legs at 70mph and almost spoil the day.

Naturally, there was no one about on the cliffs. We had taken a bit of a gamble that the sun would be baking the rock, but the shadow of Tryfan was blocking the low sun. It didn't matter really though as the air was cold everywhere. Warmed from the ride, to swapped trainers for climbing shoes and climbed two routes.

After a brain taxing couple of days, it was restorative to be doing something that required total and undivided attention. We were soon back at the bikes and wrapping up ready for the downhill run back to The Cottage.

Empty roads in an empty valley gave cause for a few loud whoops at the top of our voices before reaching a top speed of 46kpm as tears streaked from my eyes on the long downhill past Ogwen Cottage in Clare's slipstream.

Good bit of colour now in the garden...
