Instead of pulling up in the kayaks and camping for the night, we opted for the luxury of the short drive back to the comforts of The Cottage. Apart from the obvious advantage of hot showers, fine foods and a freshly made bed, it also meant that we could swap our mode of transport, so after a good breakfast in the sunshine, swapped kayaks for bicycles and returned to the island.
We had given some careful consideration to the weather conditions as well as were we thought would be least busy, having never holidayed in Wales in July before. Our calculations paid off as we set off along the deserted north eastern coast.
On a previous tour, we had cycled past Point Lynas, but as it was a bit cold and windy, we hadn't actually gone out to the lighthouse on the small Peninsula. This also turned out to be a perfect place to ride as cars are not allowed out to the point!
Despite the sunshine, a cold wind was blowing from the North West. Right out on the furthest tip of rock, we found a sheltered spot, where we got the blanket out for a sun-kissed picnic. Looking out to sea, we watched several groups (pods!) of dolphins go past in the tidal flow.
We were almost tempted in for a swim off the rocks, but it was a tricky way down to the water's edge and not as sheltered once down there, so saved that experience for another day. Eventually, the skies began to cloud over a little, so we go back on the bikes and continued to Amlwch Port.
All was calm and mellow at the Port. We stopped for a brief drink and bite to eat before continuing on our loop that 20km later had us back at the van. It was a great loop - not too far, but with plenty of interest - and a surprising amount of hill climbing!
We were back at The Cottage in time for evening drinks on the sunset area. Afterwards, we swapped kit again, so that after dinner, we could head to the lake. As the sunshine and windless conditions were looking perfect for a sunset paddle below Snowdon.
It only took a few minutes to inflate the boards and then we were off. A very light breeze blew us up towards the mountains, where we had uninterrupted views of the Snowdon Massif.
After a while, we turned around and made our way back towards the setting sun.
A fine way to end a multi activity weekend! Sea kayaking, bike touring, and now paddleboarding. Feel like we made the most of a weekend at home.
