A final drive north along the French toll roads got us to Calais in time to catch our ferry. The weather was pretty rough, but luckily we got across the channel before the worst of the summer storms arrived. It was a wet and bumpy crossing, but over soon enough.
Driving out into Dover, we faced strong winds and ferocious downpours as we sped away, glad that we weren't trying to get to France - the traffic queues went on for miles!
This was the view for pretty much the rest of the day as we tucked in under London and headed west.

As well as giving the white cliffs of Dover some appreciation on arrival back in the UK, we also got a fleeting view of another great British attraction as we drove past Stonehenge, so despite it being a wet travel day, we still ticked a few classic English tourist sights on our journey to Somerset.
Finally we arrived in Somerset, where the rains had passed and we were greeted with fine foods and a quiet bed for the night. Things have since brightened up significantly allowing a good walk along the canals and even a cheeky lunchtime pint of beer and plenty of catching up with family news.
Judging by the news, it seems like we left the alps just in time, with floods in Austria and Slovenia and more snow falling across the higher mountains.
