Arctic Explorers on Elidir Fach

Thick clouds and incoming storm conditions made a stark contrast to the stillness of the winter wonderland of yesterday. Despite difficult conditions being well on the way, I set out with some older students to venture up into the snows before the thaw arrived.

We gained height quickly against a strengthening wind as the views dimmed.

By lunchtime, the views had all but vanished and we aborted our summit bit, in favour of playing in the snow! We took lunch inside the warm shelter of the emergency bivi bag and exited to find full blizzard conditions!

In the deeper drifts, we stopped to dig a snow hole!

Well, more of a snow tunnel to be honest! I didn't fancy staying the night in it!

As the warmer air arrived, the snow became heavier which made for excellent snowballing conditions!

We staggered back to the minibus, like survivors from an arduous polar expedition, with snow stuck to us and very much in need of a hot drink! Super exciting stuff!
