A winter ascent of Pen yr Ole Wen (978m)

It was a frosty start from The Cottage this morning!

As predicted, the mountains were looking stunning. We drove a few minutes up into Ogwen to start our hike, eager to get going.

The lake (Llyn Ogwen) was absolutely still. Not a single ripple and a mirror-like reflection.

It's the first time that we've been up into the higher mountains in ages. We took a steady pace and soon arrived at the snow.

Clouds and mist blew gently in and out, but on the whole there was barely a breath.

It was fabulous to be putting in a track through the fresh snow, feeling like we were the only people for miles. (except when we fell through the crust and the going became tough!).

The views more than made up for this inconvenience though,

Having picked an adventurous way up along the steep ridge, things mellowed out nearer the top on perfect snow.

As we stopped at the stone shelter for a peanut butter and cheese sandwich, the clouds enveloped us.

The white-out on the summit plateau and exposure to the strengthening wind convinced us that a retreat back down the sheltered ridge was going to be a much more enjoyable and satisfying experience.

As if to confirm our decision, it then started to snow. We abandoned plans of a circuit of Cwm Lloer and returned down the ridge.

But not before checking out some of the mega looking gullies that drop down from the summit.

It was a tiring day, but a great introduction back into the winter mountains.
