What a difference a few hours of travel can make. The summer vibe is back on, here in Jersey. After a long and leisurely breakfast pool side at the hotel, we ventured out into the streets on bikes that we have hired for a couple of days.
The island is pretty small, so bikes seem to be the perfect way to get around. As we’ve found over the last couple of summers, bike travel let’s you see places at a more relaxed pace. It felt like another ‘famous five’ style adventure was just beginning as we left the town of St Heilier behind and headed in land.
Quiet back roads past amazing houses and open fields soon passed us by and before long, the north shore came into view.
Our first beach stop was at Rozel Bay, where the tide was out, but the water still looked inviting.
We explored the rocky coast line by foot and found a good place to picnic, but not to swim. It would have been perfect at high tide, but we didn’t have six hours to wait!
Over at sandy Fliquet Bay, the turquoise water was too much to resist. Six years ago today, after a swim in the sea on the Anglesey coast, Clare had agreed to marry me, so a swim seemed like a good way to celebrate.
The sea wasn’t exactly ‘warm’, but it was ok to swim for a bit - especially with the sun to warm us back up afterwards. (It was much warmer than the hypothermic temperatures of the Anglesey coastline, six years ago!).
If fact, I’d dried off before I’d got back to the towels.
We took the east coast route back which had us passing by no end of secluded little bays.
Rather than rush things too much though, we stopped for ice creams below the castle at Gorey, to top up our energy levels as much as anything.
Eventually, we did make it back home to The Savoy. After a drink and a shower we didn’t really have the energy or inclination to head out to dinner, so had room service bring some up to us instead!
Total Ride: 35.6km
Total Ascent: 690m!
