Climbing at Hanging Rock

Had a proper Sunday morning chill today involving breakfast in bed and a good natter before eventually exiting the van at around 10.30. The views from our bed at our lakeside spot were pretty ace, despite it being overcast. Once up, we got straight on the road, stopping at the next major lake (Lake Tekapo) where the sun was shining! We got a prime parking spot and soaked up the view over a coffee.

After checking out the 'old church' on the lake shore (80 years old is ancient in NZ terms!), we carried on heading towards a climbing area in the Canterbury area called hanging rock.
Initially we missed the turn off, and ended up in a cool town called Geraldine. This turned out to be a bonus though as they had a great ice cream shop!

After a short distance, nervously driving on 'gravel' roads, we made it to the crag. Once again, the scenery was completely different to anything we'd seen. There were rolling hills, green fields and a wide valley with a big river meandering through it. The cliff itself was limestone and had some wierd shapes to it. Coupled with the cactus looking palm trees, the area had a sort of cartoon feel to it.

The rock was pretty soft and the bolts all a bit home made, but enjoyed the route we did. Currently camped up by the river on what is our penultimate night in Wendy!
