Icelandic Skiing

Took our time over breakfast in the cabin as it was toasty warm inside and looked baltic the other side of the window - and it was!

Luckily the car wasn't frozen to the ground, so we set off and enjoyed the views as we drove across more frozen wilderness. Thankfully, the roads were generally much clearer and we only had about twenty minutes of worryingly snow covered tarmac.

The views kept getting better and better as we passed over various high cols and drove around big mountain ranges.

Shortly before our destination of Akureyri, we passed by this rocky little ridge.

On arrival at the town, we drove straight up to the small ski fields to have a quick ski before checking into our apartment. There is only one chairlift and a few drag lifts, which we knew. What we had forgotten about was that it was Easter weekend and the whole town was out skiing! The lifts were struggling to cope with the demand and there were big ques. As we only had a few hours, we got a two hour ticket and after some long waits, took our first turns on Icelandic snow.

The clouds were blowing in and out, but tthere was just enough visibility to enjoy ourselves.

Every now and then the wind blew, which was bitingly cold. After we'd used our time up on as many runs as possible, we descended into town, found our accommodation and met up with our friends who had also travelled here. Over a cup of tea, we made a plan for a ski tour together tomorrow...
