The Wanaka Cinema Experience

What happened?! We awoke to find ourselves in what seemed like a different place this morning. Last nights panorama had vanished, rain was pouring down and the van was rocking violently in our exposed position! Time to move on! As planned, we continued our journey to the town of Wanaka.

The township of Wanaka is on the edge of the mountains, so we were able to drive out of the clouds and back into blue skies. The wind however was incredible. It was whipping across the lake at a great speed and was really knocking down the temperatures.

Once the van had been refilled with water etc, we found ourselves a nice cafe with a large leather sofa and a view of Lake Wanaka. We got ourselves established on it and ordered coffees and lunch and made no rush to leave once we'd eaten. We'd planned on doing a bit of climbing in the afternoon, but a combination of not feeling great still, the gales and a general tiredness convinced us that a bit of sofa time could do us good! It certainly did! After a bit of tourist strolling around town, we booked tickets to the local cinema (as recommened by a friend back home).

The film turned out to be pretty terrible, but the cinema experience was fantastic! It probably had room for about 50 people and was only half full. There were all kinds of seats to choose from, ranging from train seats, a soft top Morris Minor to various sofas. We choose a fleece covered sofa to snuggle into. Anyway, the best bit was that there was an interval halfway through the film. Just before the break, the smell of freshly baked cookies wafted through the room! We treated ourselves to a homemade cookie (still warm inside) and ice cream to see us through the second half. Happy days!

Then after the film, found ourselves the most delicious freshly cooked pizza to enjoy. Amazingly, we were both shattered from the days 'activity' and were glad to find a nice quiet spot by the river to eat pizza and sleep...
