As has often been the case on many of our travels, we have chances upon all sorts of festivals, live bands or parades. Today we found all three!
After a delightfully slow breakfast at the apartment, we strolled into the city centre to find ourselves in the middle of the Pride Parade! The empty streets of the day before were jam packed! There was music, boats, dancing - and that was just in the canals! Ticker tape shot from cannons filled the air, along with a strong aroma of cannabis!
We watched some of the boats go by, then made our way further into town…
As well as the parade there was also a big market in the marketer square.
And a dancing brass band…. Or course!
We couldn’t believe how busy it was, but it did at least explain why it was so hard to find accommodation for this particular weekend in Utrecht!
We would have gone for drinks or ice creams but just getting into a shop or bar was an impossibility with the volume of people!
The the parade finally finished, we managed to get a classic cone of chips and mayo, then followed the flow of bodies to where a huge crowd were dancing!
Fatigued and hungry, we made our way towards home in the suburbs, where an ice cold drink in a slightly less crowded bar was restorative. A big burrito each, also helped!
A totally random and superbly wild day! A real hoot. Who knows what you’ll come across when travelling!
