Novi Sad, Serbia

A day off the bikes today, exploring the city of Novi Sad.

After a really good sleep as a luxurious lie-in, we set out into the day on foot to find a cafe for some brunch. It felt like a December morning with rain in the air and the temperature only reaching a few degrees. There were closer cafes, but we went for the fifteen minute walk on a recommendation, past some good art work.

Even on foot in the city, there are dangers to watch out for around here.

The cafe was worth the walk! Smoke free, good coffee, incredible crepes and a funky ceiling.

Inside the cafe was like being transported to a completely different country after where we’ve been over the last week. I thought back to the stark contrasts compared to the first shops and cafes we encountered after crossing the border.

The crepes were really tasty. I had big plans on working through their sweet menu, but was so full after one packed with scrambled eggs, that I simply couldn’t eat anything else!

We took a slow and circuitous route around the city centre, diverting into places of interest and at one point a maze of a market place.

Eventually we found our way out and back onto the street!

Some of the shops in the main district are housed in incredibly grand buildings that must have had a former life. This one had a super staircase…

And even a fresco on the ceiling above the stairs!

Popped inside the church in the main square too.

We had planned to cross the river on bikes and go up to the view point at a fort that looks over the city. But the cold and wet didn’t make it all that appealing, especially as we had a nice warm apartment to shelter in for a change. After dinner, it dried up, so we strolled the central city under the lights and went for ice creams.
