A day in Belgrade

Well after an epic journey through two countries and more than our fair share of crazy weather, we are finally at the target destination and back to travelling on foot, with a day set aside to explore Belgrade.

It was actually a pretty nice looking morning, so after a good breakfast at the hotel, we walked up to Belgrade Fortress which overlooks the city.

It was only about a ten minute walk, but it felt strange not to have a bike to look out for!

There was a quiet terrace cafe on the edge of the fortress walls, so we got settled into a couple of seats with an amazing view of the Danube and ordered coffees. It felt incredibly luxurious!

It was a great place to sit, chat, just look and enjoy a little warmth from the sun.

Where the River Sana joins the Danube, you could see the two colours of water merging as we watched barges ferrying in coal to the city centre.

There is a big statue that overlooks the river and loads of monuments and things to look at within the fort park. It’s a great place to stroll around and explore.

Once we got hungry, we walked down into the city centre for some snacks and wandered through streets and shops enjoying the sights.

Before heading back to the hotel, we shared a beer in the last of the late afternoon sunshine and reflected on the past two weeks of adventure. Then it was early to bed with a 04:15 airport alarm set…
