Rock Skills at Craig y Tonnau

With the last remnants of snow still clinging to the ridgelines in the mountains, we hadn't expected to be rock climbing outside this week, but with a sunny aspect and not much in the way of a breeze, Craig y Tonnau, provided the venue for my first trad climb of the year.

John and I were instructing some older students and worked together to get as much climbing done as possible in the time allowed.

It's a beautiful place to visit, even without the climbing and feels much more like Scotland that Wales. We even had a view of Snowdon summit in the distance.

The sun did it's best to keep us warm. It was fine for climbing, but I kept my jacket on.

There were lots of 'rock skills' to impart, not just the actual climbing. The students had all done lots of indoor climbing, so the focus was more on placing protection and making yourself safe at the top of a cliff.

And appreciating the natural environment!...

On the way home, we witnessed an incredible light show. The colours of the sunset were so vivid and bright, we were all transfixed. I got home at dark, just as a full moon was rising over the mountains. Beauty.
