I quite like arriving in new places under the cover of darkness as in the morning, you never quite know what you'll find when you draw the curtains. Happily, we were greeted with some very nice scenes and blue sky when we woke in Athens. The pool looked very inviting, but although the sky was blue, it didn't quite feel like swimming temperatures. Instead we got stuck into the big breakfast that had been laid out for us.
It was an impressive hotel - made all the better by only housing a handful of guests! Got to love off-season travel - we had the run of the place! After a big feed, I selected some tasty looking pastries to have with my coffee in a comfy chair by the pool, but was quite surprised to find that they were filled with cheese not sweet cream! Ha-ha! The fun of foreign travel!
Eventually, after a delightfully slow start, we got back on the road and drove a few hours south of the city, stopping for fuel (about the same price as the UK, but diesel is a bit cheaper), and to stock up on some food for the next week or so.
At a café by the supermarket, we got a coffee (very strong and gritty!), and Clare had a 'mountain tea with honey' - which if you look closely in the photo, was brewed over a camp stove!
After crossing several high passes, we followed a gentle angled road through hillsides lined with olive trees.
Until we could drive no further and the road ended at the sea.
We had half an hour to wait until we met our B&B host, to took a walk along the beach. The water didn't feel too cold to touch and there was plenty of interest on the rocky shoreline.
We are staying right on the waters edge in the top of an otherwise deserted apartment on a relatively deserted stretch of coastline. This is the view from the garden this evening....
There were some funky looking bugs about!
And this is our home for the next couple of weeks (well, a tiny bit of it anyway!). The gardens are amazingly well kept and ours to roam around in.
Before dark, we popped down to the town to get some water (it turns out that you can't drink from the taps around here!). After so long planning this trip from afar, it was good to finally see the town name and that it actually exists!
Shopping when far from home is always fun, especially when you don't speak the language. We picked up some extra snacks, but decided against any 'cans of milk'!
Or frozen octopus!! Uck!
At least the 'Food Market' sign reassured us that we were in the right place, even if we couldn't understand much else!
Tomorrow we set out to see what the rock climbing is like...
