There was a thin vail of cloud keeping the heat off the sun as we set out this morning. A night in a bed and a solid feed had done us both the world of good.
We were packed up and leaving the farm yard at 09:06, despite the temptations of a long lie in!
Soon enough, the peddles were turning as we glided off eastwards. Although, some grinding noises from the cogs, did give a little bit of concern for a while and required a bit of oily, dusty gunk clearing from yesterday’s dirt roads.
It turns out that we are on a ‘Castles Trail’, although the castles (Schloßs), are more like grand houses and mostly being lived in. We went through the gates and up this drive to the main house (before we realised it was private) and were amazed to a maid (in uniform), come out of the front door to take the shopping from the boot of the nice car that had pulled in past us!
Plenty of corn being harvested around here at the moment and some huge farm houses.
This was my favourite Schloß. Nice moat around it too to keep the riff-raff away!
It was a very rural route, so no villages or cafes to rest rest in. Eventually (with a gentle uphill in sight), we pulled over for a snack bar in a shady bus stop. We still had 8km to go before the next town where we could buy lunch!
But when lunch came, it was a beauty. Havixbeck provided ingredients for the best sandwich I’ve ever had (or maybe I was just really hungry?!). Eaten on a shady bench with my shoes off. Bliss.
The food and short rest gave us the power to continue on to the city, where we arrived late afternoon.
It was a beautiful entrance to the town, through nice parklands. We done over 70km so went straight to the city apartment we’d booked.
It’s a super nice place. So new in fact that on Google Maps it’s still a building site! Very tech to get in. No reception, just codes to doors sent via email. Not sure the bikes were allowed in, but it seemed okay!
Once showered and freshened up, we found the perfect German wine to celebrate ‘getting to Münster’ with!
Total Ride: 73km
